The man was freed with a winch, but doctors declared him dead at the scene.


In the heart of London, a man was killed after being struck by a telescoping urinal.

Working repairing a hydraulic urinal near Cambridge Circus in the centre of the West End, the maintenance worker became caught.

To release the man trapped beneath the street, emergency personnel laboured for three hours.

As rescue attempts continue, Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road are both still closed.

Around 25 firemen from the Soho, Euston, and Dowgate fire stations were on the scene along with four fire engines. At adjacent Trafalgar Square, an air ambulance had just touched down.

The man who was gravely hurt in Cambridge Circus was pronounced dead at the scene, despite the efforts of emergency responders, the Metropolitan Police announced in a
statement on Twitter.

About 25 firefighters and four fire engines were dispatched.

The man who was imprisoned beneath a hydraulic urinal on Cambridge Circus at street level has been released, according to a London Ambulance Service spokesperson. The Ambulance Service is now in charge of him.

An earlier statement from a representative of the Metropolitan Police stated: "Police were alerted to a badly injured male at Cambridge Circus, W1, at approximately 1.10 pm on Friday, January 27.


The worker is said to have suffered crush injuries at the scene while working on a "telescopic urinal."

"Attendees include LFB, LAS, and London's Air Ambulance. Road restrictions are being helped by officers.
Firefighters have been summoned to a person who is stranded on Charing Cross Road in the heart of London, according to a spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade.

Under a hydraulic urinal, a man is pinned. To effect a rescue, firefighters are collaborating with paramedics.

"At 1:05 PM, the brigade was called. Around 25 firemen from the Soho, Euston, and Dowgate fire stations are on the scene with four fire engines.
